Medistim^®

The MediStim^® XP is a portable, digital, dual channel muscle stimulation device incorporating a comprehensive range of programmes to aid in the rehabilitation process in the clinic or at home.

The MediStim^® XP re-educates and strengthens atrophied, weakened or immobilised muscle through Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) therapy and aids in the management of acute pain through Transcutaneous Electrical Nreve Stimulation (TENS).

NMES may be defined as the application of electrical stimulation of the peripheral nervous system to contract a muscle either through the direct activation of the motor neurons in the mixed peripheral nerve, or indirectly through reflex recruitment.

TENS is a pain therapy based on the application of electrical stimuli to the skin via stimulation of the nerve fibers. There are two methods: The “pain gate” theory, which blocks the pain signals to the brain and/or through the increased release of endorphins, which inhibits the emergence of pain.

Pain Gate Control: MediStim^® XP works by gently stimulating your sensory nerves, which suppress or block the pain signal to the brain. When the pain pathways, which send information to the brain are blocked, it becomes more difficult for the brain to register the pain sensation thereby giving immediate pain relief, and you register the ‘tingling’ sensation of the TENS and not the pain.

Endorphin Release: Endorphins are the body’s own natural pain relieving hormones and are released when the body fells certain types of pain. MediStim^® XP encourages the release of endorphins through a comfortable tapping sensation that results in pain relief even after the unit is switched off.

It takes on average, 20-40 minutes of using stimulation before these endorphins are released and the body will continue to release these until the treatment session has stopped. The endorphins also remain in the body for several hours after the stimulation has stopped, giving residual pain relief.

Yes, MediStim^® XP has been specifically designed to allow for maximum mobility during use. It can be worn discreetly under clothing offering effective treatment whenever and wherever needed with minimum inconvenience. It is not recommended to use the MediStim^® XP while driving or operating machinery.

Medistim^® XP an extremely safe method of muscle stimulation. Note, however, that a slight reddening of the skin is quite normal under the electrodes during and for a short time after treatment. The redness should fade shortly after the treatment. If the problem persists, stop using the unit and seek further advice. If any irritations, skin reactions, over-sensitivity or other side effects occur, please contact the neurotech^® team. In such cases stop use immediately. Irritations can usually be reduced by changing the position of the electrodes.

MediStim^® XP is designed with a state-of-the-art pad contact indicator, which only allows the unit to deliver stimulation when the adhesive pads are in full contact with the skin.  If a pad becomes detached during use, the stimulation will stop and the unit will beep. When the pad is re-attached, the unit will automatically increase the stimulation to the previously set level.

This depends on a number of factors including skin type, storage conditions and regularity of use. As a general rule, however, with daily application the electrodes should last at least 4 weeks. If usage is less than this, replacement should be less frequent. To avoid infection, electrodes may only be used by a single individual.

MediStim^® is designed to provide muscle and nerve stimulation using the principles of Neuromuscular Electrical Nerve Stimulation (NMES). However, if the stimulation appears to become uncomfortable during a session, decrease the level of intensity. Check that the pads are not worn. If the discomfort does not improve you should discontinue use of the MediStim^® XP and try again at a later stage. Please consult the neurotech^® team if the problem persists.
